New play ‘The XXX-Rated Genius’ set for reading on Nov. 14 in Tampa  following reading in Pennsylvania

SARASOTA, FL: Widely-produced, published and awarded playwright Jack Gilhooley has been named winner of the national 2018 Free Speech Play Contest Festival for his full-length comedy The XXX-Rated Genius, a satire about corruption in contemporary higher education. He personalizes the situation through the character of a college co-ed who is revealed as a pornographic film “actress” by the school’s administration. The play will be staged as a book-in-hand reading on Wednesday, November 14 at 7 pm by Stageworks Theatre, 1120 E. Kennedy Blvd, Tampa. Admission is free but reservations are suggested (813)  374-2416. The play was previously read at Nittany Theatre at the Barn, Boalsburg, PA in mid-September. Nittany Theatre is affiliated with Penn State U.

In The XXX-Rated Genius, the offending co-ed defends herself to the university president on the basis of needing to earn money for her upper 5-figure annual tuition. Just as the college is about to dismiss her, she wins a Rhodes scholarship. Multiple-award-winning author Gilhooley said, “There’s more of this going on than we care to admit. Students are hard-pressed to keep up with the escalating college costs even as endowments are going through the roof.” There’s no nudity or pornography in the play. “I may be just one more dumb playwright but I’m not stupid,” he added.

Gilhooley has an extensive background as an international playwright and scholar. Previously based in New York City, he currently resides on Florida’s Gulf Coast and saw an earlier staged reading of The XXX-Rated Genius at Fogartyville Café in Sarasota.

The award is funded and underwritten by Charles Koch Industries. The playwright reminds us that Lincoln Center is funded by the Koch family.
