THE PLAY IS THE THING : Text Analysis for Actors and Directors

For Beginning to Intermediate Students

In order to build your character, you must first understand the play and your character’s place in the world that is being created.
In this class, taught by Stageworks Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director,  Karla Hartley,  participants will:

• Develop practical skills on approaching dramatic text as actors or directors
• Understand the genre, style, mechanics, significance, structure, and value of a play
• Be able to make defensible acting and directing choices based on textual understanding.
• Be able to have the ability to envision a final production, imagining artistic, practical, and technical considerations.
• Learn how to approach text as an actor and glean the information available to develop character.


Karla Hartley is currently the Producing Artistic  Director for Stageworks Theatre in the Channel District.  She received a BFA in Theater Studies from Boston University in 1992 and is the owner of three Theatre Tampa Bay awards for Best Director.
